Human-Machine Intelligent Systems Lab
HMIS Lab - Ursinus College

Computing that makes life better.

Use-inspired research at the intersection of teaching, learning, and biomedicine, with a commitment to AI that explains itself.

Welcome. I’m glad you’re here.

Our lab is about the work, the people, and the use the work is put to. We collaborate across the sciences and humanities, including biomedicine, teaching, and learning, and we believe AI should be honest about how it reasons. If you’re an undergraduate curious about research, you belong here.

TEACHING & LEARNING

Helping students and teachers see how AI thinks.

We build machine learning systems that do not just give answers, but show their reasoning, so students can learn alongside them and teachers can trust them. The work spans intelligent tutors, automated feedback for student writing, and explainable models that surface the why, not just the what.

BIOMEDICAL ML

Machine learning where care actually happens.

Working with clinicians and biologists, we build models for the messy realities of clinical and lab data: small samples, missing labels, drifting distributions, sensors that move with the patient. The aim is research that lands where it is needed, not benchmarks for their own sake.
